Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey didn’t hesitate when asked if Alex Smith can be one of the NFL’s 10 best quarterbacks.
“I believe he can be a top-10 quarterback, and here’s why,” Dorsey told USA TODAY Sports recently.
“I think he’s got the athleticism. I think he’s got accuracy. I think he’s got really good reaction quickness. Once he gets comfortable with the offense, he reads defenses very well. I think the game’s slowed down for him.”
Smith, 29, was playing the best football of his eight-year NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers last season before suffering a concussion that opened the door for Colin Kaepernick to replace him.
The Chiefs needed a replacement for Matt Cassel to run new coach Andy Reid’s West Coast offense and swung a trade in February for Smith, whom Dorsey said “needs some stability” after playing for seven offensive coordinators since the 49ers drafted him No. 1 overall in 2005.
“He’s a natural leader,” Dorsey said. “I think mentally he’s very quick. I think he’s got a deep intellect. Guys naturally kind of go to him, and that’s important, to have a position where guys kind of look to him and say, ‘You know what? You’re the guy.’ He is the guy.”
Smith has started more than 10 games in a season just twice in his career, thanks to multiple regime changes and his own inconsistency. But he had career highs in completion percentage (70.2%), yards per attempt (8.0) and passer rating (104.1) before the concussion last season.
The hope is that by working with Reid, coordinator Doug Pederson and quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy, Smith will pick up where he left off. If he succeeds, the Chiefs could move sooner than later to extend his contract, which includes base salaries of $7.5 million in 2013 and ’14, plus $3 million in incentives each year.
“He’s been through so much adversity,” Dorsey said. “He’s overcome it, and he’s still fighting. And you know what? He’s still got a lot of years left.”
