There is some question about the readiness of the back end of the Milwaukee Brewers’ rotation heading into the final week of spring training.

The front end, though, looks to be rounding into form as expected.

After a month of fits and starts brought on by the World Baseball Classic, Yovani Gallardo turned in his longest and most effective start yet Friday, a 5 1/3-inning, roughly 75-pitch outing against the Chicago Cubs at Maryvale Baseball Park.

Gallardo allowed four hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out four in a 4-1 Brewers loss.

“I felt good,” he said. “I think the command got away from me there a little bit – I was just missing up in the zone. But it was the first time I went 70-plus pitches, so that probably had something to do with it.

“But I feel healthy. I went out there, got my work done, got into the sixth and got out of some jams.”

Gallardo faced the minimum through three innings before allowing a leadoff single to David DeJesus in the fourth. He promptly picked him off, though, a move that saved him a run when Starlin Castro andAnthony Rizzo followed with singles.

He got Alfonso Soriano to fly out next before walking NateSchierholtz to load the bases. Gallardo then struck out Welington Castro swinging to end the threat.

Gallardo’s walk of Luis Valbuena to open the fifth came back to haunt him when former Brewer Carlos Villanueva, starting for the Cubs, bunted him over to second. With two outs, DeJesus lofted a pop fly to short left field that clanked off shortstop Donnie Murphy‘s glove to score Valbuena and make it 1-0.

Castro flied out to end the fifth, and Gallardo struck out Rizzo looking to open the sixth before being relieved by Alfredo Figaro.

“He was out of sync a couple of at-bats, but pretty good overall,” manager Ron Roenicke said. “Sometimes he gets out of rhythm and all of a sudden you see those three, four (pitches) in a row high. It’s just unusual to see it from Yo.

“But two outings ago he was real good so he’s still OK.”

Gallardo had pitched a total of 8 2/3 innings in three starts with the Brewers coming in, with his last being a two-inning outing on short rest in order to get him in line for his fourth consecutive opening day.

He pitched twice for Mexico in the WBC after his first outing for the Brewers, with the major effort coming in a 49-pitch start and victory over Team USA on March 9.

Gallardo also was dealing with a right-groin strain that he’s since moved past.

“It was a little bit different for me this year, going over and pitching in the Classic and coming back,” said Gallardo, who dropped his earned-run average from 7.27 to 4.50 and didn’t surrender a home run for the first time.

“The schedule was different but I’m right where I need to be as far as pitch count and starts and things like that. I’ll be right at about 90 pitches for the last start of spring and ready to go over 100 for that first one during the season.”
