Todd Frazier’s motto: Different year, same attitude.
“I’m taking nothing for granted,” he said. “You’ve got to have that mindset. You can’t be complacent.”
This year is different in that Frazier’s position on the roster is virtually guaranteed. In fact, he’s the starting third baseman. Last year, he had to make the roster. He did — only to get sent to minors after the Reds signed Alfredo Simon.
Frazier got called up April 17 and spent the rest of the year with the Reds. He hit .273 with 19 home runs and 67 RBI in 422 at-bats. He finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.
“Last year is the past,” he said. “It’s a little different. But it’s still only my second full year. I’ve got to understand that. I’ve got to go in with a chip on my shoulder and say: Hey man, let’s go win a job. Why not have that mindset? Am I more comfortable? Sure. I know the guys. I’ve been around them a lot.”
Frazier has paid passing attention to the Scott Rolen saga.
“I see it,” he said. “It’s out there. What are you going to do?”
