There appears to remain a long road ahead for the left-hander Johan Santana, who has not pitched in a spring training game and will not join his teammates for the start of the regular season next month.

Santana, who felt weakness in his shoulder upon arriving to camp, has been limited to playing catch on flat ground at a distance of 90 feet. That distance will need to grow considerably before he can consider getting back on a mound for a bullpen session, something he has not done since March 6.

“I’m just building up my strength and throwing more volume,” he said. “And then, after that, hopefully I’ll be able to start getting on a mound soon.”

Manager Terry Collins said Friday that Santana would stay back at the team’s spring training complex when the Mets return to New York for their season opener on April 1. The team has not made any official announcements about placing him on the disabled list.

The original hope at the start of camp was that Santana would be the team’s opening day starter. Santana, 34, has one more year on his Mets contract. He will make $25.5 million this year, and the Mets have a $5.5 million buyout for his 2014 team option year.

Santana reiterated that there was no specific issue with his shoulder — one that was surgically repaired in 2010 — besides a general lack of strength.

He would not speculate on when he would be back on the mound.

“We can’t think ahead,” he said. “The way we’re approaching everything is, every day make sure we have a good day.”
