On Monday, the Lakers announced the hiring of Kurt Rambis and Johnny Davis to round out the staff of Coach Mike D’Antoni.
“Kurt and Johnny bring many years of NBA experience both as coaches and as former players to this team,” D’Antoni said. “Kurt is a great basketball mind, extremely good at working with big men, and his experience as a head coach in this league is going to prove very helpful to our staff. Johnny is a two-time NBA head coach with years of experience playing as well as coaching in this league. The vast array of NBA knowledge he brings to the table will be invaluable to us.”
The Lakers will have three primary assistants under D’Antoni, with Rambis and Davis joining Dan D’Antoni.
Mark Madsen and Larry Lewis were recently hired as player development coaches.
Rambis, who tweeted he was “back” earlier in the day, served as an assistant under Phil Jackson and Del Harris. He even served briefly as head coach during the 1999 lockout-shortened season.
Davis was head coach of the Orlando Magic from 2003-05 and the Philadelphia 76ers for the 1996-97 season. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors.
All of D’Antoni’s assistants from last season have moved on, with the exception of his brother.
Steve Clifford was named head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. Eddie Jordan will run the program at Rutgers. Darvin Ham joined Coach Mike Budenholzer‘s staff with the Atlanta Hawks. Bernie Bickerstaff and Phil Handy will work for Coach Mike Brown with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Chuck Person has yet to land a new position.
The Lakers did pursue Alvin Gentry for D’Antoni’s staff but the former Phoenix Suns head coach took a job with the Clippers instead under Coach Doc Rivers.
