Story lines: Panthers QB Cam Newton enters his third year in search of his first winning season. The top pick in the 2011 draft says his team is ready to come out of the gate faster after stumbling to 2-6 starts in 2011 and 2012. A greater emphasis on the running game might make Newton’s life easier. And it’s a good week to stay on the ground against the Seahawks defensive line, which is riddled with injuries. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, carrying the weight of Super Bowl expectations in his second season, must wake up the offense early. Seattle was 2-3 in 1 p.m. ET starts last season, beating only the lowly New York Jets and Bills.
Need to know: The Panthers won their final four games of 2012. … Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch ran for more than 100 yards in eight of his last 10 outings.
