The Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers were tied at 2-2 entering the third period; time for Rick Nash to electrify the Madison Square Garden crowd again with his speed, stickhandling skills and will to score.
Defenseman Marc Staal left the game after the puck hit him near the right eye on a deflected shot.
Nash scored twice in the final period, leading the Rangers to a 4-2 victory Tuesday night. The Rangers’ third straight win lifted them into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
“That’s my job — that’s what I’m trying to do,” said Nash, a game-breaking wing who was acquired in a trade last summer after nine fruitless years in Columbus in which he averaged 32 goals a season but made the playoffs only once.
“It’s fun for me to play in front of a sold-out building in a hockey city that truly loves the Rangers,” he said.
The Rangers are 11-5-1 with Nash in the lineup, 0-3-1 when he is absent.
Nash’s seven goals have all been scored in the third period. “It would be nice to get them early,” he said, “but you’ll take them any way you can.”
Nash’s first goal — a snap shot that beat goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to the long side from the right face-off circle at 2 minutes 50 seconds of the third period — broke the tie. It marked the third straight game in which Nash has scored since he returned from a four-game absence with an undisclosed injury, believed to be a concussion.
Nash scored again at 11:42, breaking in on goal, going forehand-backhand and freezing Bryzgalov, leaving him kneeling and helpless in a butterfly position as Nash poked the puck into the net.
“I just started smiling after he scored the second goal,” said Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who made 23 saves. “It just feels so good to have a player like that on the team that can be the difference every night.”
Lundqvist said Nash reminded him of Jaromir Jagr, who scored 54 goals with the Rangers in 2005-6.
Nash, playing on a line with Carl Hagelin and center Derek Stepan, has scored a point in seven straight games.
Rangers Coach John Tortorella said: “You get big plays like that in the third period, you win a hockey game.”
“He’s so dangerous,” said Ryan Callahan, who also had an excellent game, scoring twice in the first period to offset two Philadelphia goals and adding an assist.
Callahan also has seven goals, tying him for the team lead with Nash, Hagelin and Marian Gaborik.
The Rangers won despite the absence of center Brad Richards, who missed the game with an undisclosed injury he sustained from an illegal check Sunday night.
They also lost Marc Staal early in the third period when he was struck near the right eye by a deflected Flyers shot as he stood in front of the Rangers’ net. He was down on the ice for several moments, then skated to the trainer’s room, holding a bloody towel to his face.
There was no word on his condition immediately after the game.
Richards was injured in a 3-2 shootout victory over Buffalo when he crashed face-first into the boards after being shoved from behind by Patrick Kaleta. Richards lay on the ice for some time, but returned to finish that game. Kaleta was suspended five games and fined $76,000 by the N.H.L.
Richards missed practice Monday and took part briefly in the morning skate Tuesday. He left early and was scratched from the lineup 90 minutes before the opening face-off. Tortorella said before the game that Richards was “banged up.”

The victory Tuesday extended the Rangers’ winning streak over the Flyers at Madison Square Garden to six games. Over all, they have won 10 of their last 11 games against the Flyers. … The Rangers’ next game is against the Islanders on Thursday at Nassau Coliseum. … The Rangers summoned Micheal Haley from Connecticut of the American Hockey League to replace Brad Richards. Haley is a former Islander who has fought 111 times in 406 regular-season and playoff games as a professional. Haley was the sixth player called up for a brief spell with the Rangers this season. Brandon Segal, Kris Newbury, Benn Ferriero, Brandon Mashinter and Christian Thomas had already played four games or fewer on call-ups to the Rangers.
