Of the 19 returning starters for the Texas Longhorns there may not be another player aside from QB David Ash as important as WR Mike Davis to what the Longhorns are trying to accomplish this season. Seventh all-time in Longhorn history in receptions with 149 and receiving yards with 2,026, Davis has been named to his third Biletnikoff preseason watch list. And this year he has as good a chance as ever to take home the hardware.

A Dallas-Skyline graduate, Davis was the 34th overall prospect out of Rivals.com 100 ranked in 2010. Davis was the fourth overall WR in that year’s class and despite a slow start due to a QB carousel his first two seasons at Texas, when Mack Brown finally decided to roll with one guy after deciding betweenCase McCoy and Ash, the statistics showed in Davis’ improvement as he almost accumulated the same amount of receiving yards in one season last year as he had the first two years combined.

Initially announcing his choice to go pro after last season, Davis has since decided to return and finish his four years at Austin bringing a tremendous buzz to Davis and the possibilities for this season.  A 2012 second team All-Big 12 selection, Davis pulled in 939 yards and seven touchdowns last year as he emerged as the go-to receiver for QB David Ash.

With a lot of questions surrounding the rest of the Big 12 at the QB position, there may only be the Longhorns and the Longhorns alone who seem to have a complete package on offense, especially at the QB and that is music to Davis’ ears.

Ash coming back on the verge of a breakthrough season will only heighten the hype and the workload that Davis will have this season. Davis should be well over the 1,000-yard mark, double digits in touchdowns and a team leader in receptions with all due respect to Jaxon Shipley and the rest of the Texas receivers.

Davis has jump ball abilities to go up after a ball at its highest point that may only be rivaled by USC’s Marquise Lee, another Biltenikoff candidate. His hands are going to be better than ever, naturally since it’s his senior year, and his speed is already a problem for defensive backs.

Davis is going to be one of the best receivers in the nation in 2013. It will be no surprise if Texas finds themselves back in a January bowl game and if they do the statistics will show Mike Davis was a vital part to bringing the boys in burnt orange back to the top of college football. And if David Ash is a Heisman finalist, well, apply the same concept; a big thanks to Mike Davis.
