Since the beginning of preseason practice, right guard Anthony Steen has lined up next to Arie Kouandjio and Austin Shepherd on Alabama’s offensive line.
Kouandjio and Shepherd opened camp at left guard and right tackle, respectively, before switching spots briefly, only to be switched again.
As of Wednesday’s practice, Shepherd is at right tackle with Kouandjio at left guard.
Steen hasn’t been able to gain that chemistry he had with D.J. Fluker in 2012.
“It’s been a little difficult,” Steen said. “Shepherd has a little different footwork than Arie (Kouandjio), but it’s nothing I can’t adjust to. Arie was a little different at power blocking than Shepherd was, and he was a little different than Shepherd was at pass protection, but it wasn’t anything too difficult.”
So who’s going to start at right tackle?
“I think — I don’t know for sure, but looking at today’s practice it might be (Austin) Shepherd,” Steen said Tuesday. “You never know. Take it one day at a time. You never know.”
Classes begin
The University of Alabama began classes on Wednesday. For the Tide, it takes away nearly every minute of free time the players had in camp.
“Maybe for some of the freshmen, they might be excited for it, they finally get to see new people instead of seeing us all the time,” linebacker C.J. Mosley said. “The main thing for us is the time, the time frame, how you manage your time. So they have to go to sleep early tonight and get ready for school, we got our books, but when two o’clock comes you’ve got to think football again.”
Right guard Anthony Steen, a senior, vividly remembers his first day of class following his first preseason camp.
“There were about 80 people and the bright side was of those 80 people about 70 were girls, so I was excited for class,” Steen said. “I came from a little school and every class in my high school was maybe 20 people, so it was a big adjustment.”
