Wide receiver Randy Moss told reporters at Super Bowl media day Tuesday that he believes he’s the all-time best receiver in NFL history.
In a San Francisco 49ers jersey, nonetheless, the team Jerry Rice won three Super Bowls with.
But even if we’re debating Moss vs. Rice, NFL.com Fantasy analyst Dave Dameshek is taking it a step further: He says the Detroit Lions’ Calvin Johnson makes the case for No. 2 all-time, ahead of Moss.
Of course, Johnson may not even be halfway through his NFL career, having six seasons, 7,836 yards and 54 touchdowns under his belt at the age of 27.
But he’s certainly in the prime of his career, coming off a season in which he broke Jerry Rice’s record with 1,961 receiving yards.
“Yes, this depends on how the next half-dozen years go, but if we assume he can stay on the field, Johnson will take a run at most of Rice’s records,” Dameshek argues. “He’s got a big-armed young QB in Matt Stafford throwing him the ball and there are just enough other pieces in the Detroit Lions’ offense to keep the other team from putting a nickel’s-worth of DBs on him.”
On his all-time list, Dameshek has Moss at No. 3, Michael Irvin at No. 4 and Larry Fitzgerald (still playing for the Arizona Cardinals) at No. 5. He mentions that his “primary analytic tools” were his eyes, so his list is based more on the eyeball test than statistics.
Rice has 22,895 career receiving yards and 197 receiving touchdowns, so Megatron may need at least another decade, if not more, to catch up to Rice.
