Our friends at Field Gulls are making their first appearance in the 2013 SB Nation NFL writers mock draft today after the Percy Harvin trade took them out of Round 1. After trading for a former Florida wideout, could the Seahawks add even more talent to a rising offense in the form of a former Florida tight end?

Kenneth Arthur: “My first inclination with Seattle’s first pick is that they won’t be picking 56th. I think that many draft pick slots are basically like speed limits; it’s a strong suggestion but you should probably assume that nobody is going exactly that number. Especially with Pete Carroll and John Schneider because they have shown a strong proclivity to get the most out of every draft pick, whether that’s getting the right player or getting more draft picks. Staying where you are at without trying to do that, is just lazy.

“However, given that instead I am unable to even think about that possibility, I had to look at the board and wonder what player makes the most sense for Seattle. I think the Seahawks will be looking for a player that can either play multiple positions on the offensive line, a defensive tackle, linebacker, or a tight end. I don’t think there’s an order to that, I think its the best player available with the luxury that Seattle doesn’t need to find a Bobby Wagner type that must start right away. None of these guys will start right away. Here’s another word to look out for when talking about the Seahawks and player evaluation: versatility. If you have one player that can do multiple things, you save roster spots for other players. That’s why I think if it’s an offensive lineman, Kyle Long would have worked out really well if available. But he’s not.

“I decided that none of the defensive tackles or linebackers were doing it for me, so I went a little outside of my comfort zone and selected a tight end even though I’m not sure that Jordan Reed is the guy they like the most, I think he’s a BPA type and fits the Joker-TE role they could be looking for.

“What we know so far in Pete and John’s tenure is that they signed Zach Miller to a big contract and he currently will have the highest cap hit in 2013, while also coming off of a major injury to end his season. We know that last year they acquired both Kellen Winslow and Evan Moore, but neither worked out. We don’t think that that Cam Morrah or Anthony McCoy will ever be the right kind of player at the maximum talent level that we want out of the position. Pete and John spent three years looking for quarterbacks, at low risk, until they found Russell Wilson. They’ve spent considerable time, money, and effort on seemingly looking for the right tight end, the kind of guy that could make this offense ridiculous, the Aaron Hernandez/Jimmy Graham type. That’s why I believe that it makes a lot of sense for them to go with a player like Reed here, the type that in two years could be racking up 800-1000 yards per season and helping the Seahawks develop into one of the nastiest offenses in the NFL.”

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

Reed is a nice choice, but it’s difficult to find where he’d get an opportunity in Seattle. The Seahawks added Percy Harvin and all of the team’s top receiving targets are back. Even if Doug Baldwin is let go, it’s just hard to see the Seahawks adding enough pass attempts to make Reed worth it. While Carroll does let his players compete for their positions, it’s doubtful Reed could beat Miller out of that many targets. Someone like Brian Winters of Kent State or Justin Pugh of Syracuse – players can play tackle or guard – may be better choices for the Seahawks.
