The La Salle Explorers took advantage of their Kansas City karma and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Guard Tyrone Garland’s basket on a drive through the lane with 2.5 seconds left gave the 13th-seeded Explorers a 76-74 victory over No. 12 Mississippi on Sunday night at the Sprint Center.

The Explorers, who have won three NCAA Tournament games in five nights in two time zones, advanced to the Sweet 16, where they will face No. 9 Wichita State on Thursday in Los Angeles.

It’s the farthest La Salle has advanced since 1955 when LaSalle, as defending NCAA champion, reached the title game of a 24-team tournament and lost to Bill Russell’s University of San Francisco team.

Ramon Galloway led the Explorers, 24-9, with 24 points and Garland scored 21.

Marshall Henderson led Ole Miss, 27-9, with 21 points.

Reginald Buckner’s put-back gave the Rebels a 73-72 lead with 2:43, but he missed the free throw that followed — the Rebels’ 10th miss in 19 attempts. LaDarius White then made one of two free throws, making it 74-72 with 1:58 to play.

La Salle’s Tyreek Duren tied it 74-74 by making both ends of a one-and-one with 1:07 to play. White missed the basket with a jumper with 44 seconds to play, but in the ensuing scramble, the Rebels were awarded the ball out of bounds with 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

But Henderson was unable to get off a shot in time, and La Salle took over on the shot-clock violation with 32 seconds to play.

Ole Miss point guard Jarvis Summers gave the Rebels a 71-69 with a basket with 3:25 to play in the game, but Duren answered with a three-point shot for a 72-71 lead.

La Salle tied the game at 69-69 on a five-point possession. Sam Mills made a three-pointer and was fouled with 4:01 to play. He missed the free throw, but Jerrell Wright grabbed the rebound and scored on the put-back.

Henderson gave the Rebels a 65-62 lead with a traditional three-point play when he was fouled making a jump shot and converted the free throw with 6:39 to play.

Duren answered with a basket, and the Explorers had a chance to take the lead but Ole Miss’ Reginald Buckner blocked the shot, and the Rebels’ Nick Williams scored at the other end for a 67-64 lead with 4:57 to play.

Ole Miss trailed 55-52 when forward Murphy Holloway put together a four-point play with 10:44 left to play. Holloway scored an inside basket and was fouled. He missed the free throw but gathered the rebound in the lane and scored for a 56-55 lead.

After an Explorers’ turnover, Henderson drained a three-point shot, extending the lead to 59-55 with 9:49 to play.

La Salle led 40-38 at halftime as Galloway made five of eight three-point attempts and had 19 points, while Henderson got off to a slow start for the second straight game. Henderson made just three of nine from beyond the arc in the first half, and had 11 points.
