Austin Seferian-Jenkins returned to the practice field inside Husky Stadium on Friday, one day after having successful surgery on his fractured right pinkie.

ASJ was in uniform, with a cast/wrap covering his pinkie, but didn’t participate in team drills. At least one teammate believes the star tight end will suit up for the season opener against Boise State in 15 days.

“He’ll be back. He’ll be back,” senior quarterback Keith Price said. “He just told me today, ‘Hey man, I could play today if I wanted to.’ But I told him, ‘Man, there’s no need to do that.’ But he’s awesome. I know he’s an extremely hard-worker and I know he’ll be back with us.”

Coach Steve Sarkisian said ASJ has had a “great attitude and an upbeat mentality. He’s really been engaging, which is what you want when a guy becomes a junior and starts to mature.”

There was no ligament damage to ASJ’s pinkie.

“The surgery went good,” Sarkisian said. “Just as we thought from the X-ray, it was a clean break. They inserted the pin in his pinkie and now the rehab process is underway. … It didn’t have anything to do with the knuckle. It was right on the pinkie.”

With ASJ watching, the Huskies held a mostly light-hearted workout in shells inside Husky Stadium on Friday evening to wrap up their final daily-double of training camp. It was also the last practice open to the media.

UW will hold another scrimmage on Saturday in what will be a sort-of last-chance opportunity for some guys to solidify themselves on the two-deep or for others to work their way on it.

CB Marcus Peters was as active as he’s been since banging knees with WR DiAndre Campbelllast week. During the last 11-on-11 drill, Peters skied to intercept a Cyler Miles pass.

The Pac-12 Networks filmed most of the practice and had at least one coach, Peter Sirmon, mike’d up. The players were playing it up for the cameras; several jogged out of the tunnel as if it was game-time introductions, hooting and screaming and skipping onto the field.

Shaq Thompson was among those attempting punts from midfield. He seemed to enjoy himself and, in a pinch, I’d say he’d be able to, uh, hang in there.

The Huskies had some sort of home run derby and another playful game with a softball-sized ball (I couldn’t tell what was going on from the other side of the field, to be honest, but they seemed to be having a lot of fun).

On the next play, Price hit TE Michael Hartvigson with a perfectly-thrown ball near the sideline. Alas, on the next play, safety Brandon Beaver picked off Price down the field.

UW wrapped up practice in the victory formation, with Price taking a knee.
