Perhaps it was poetic justice that Monique Reid made two free throws to beat seemingly unbeatable Baylor.

The University of Louisville senior is the last remaining key member of the 2009 Final Four team. She has battled through knee injuries that caused her to miss all of last year and eight games this season. U of L coach Jeff Walz said she’s only 50 percent now and played only 13 minutes off the bench Sunday night.

But she played the most important final seconds of the game. Reid drove and drew a foul on Baylor star Brittney Griner with 2.6 seconds left. She made free throws to give the Cardinals an 82-81 victory. When the game was over, Reid had a flashback.

“It took me back to the 2009 team,” the Fern Creek High graduate said. “I felt like I was going to the Final Four. It’s an amazing feeling and it’s great that I could hit those clutch free throws. I just wanted to get on top of the building and scream.”

The 6-foot-1 Reid was fearless in attacking the 6-foot-8 Griner. All game long the Cardinals had been using the 3-point shot (16 of 25), but this time Reid went right into the paint. Right against the NCAA’s all-time leader in blocked shots.

“The play was just push the ball,” Reid said. “I saw Griner coming at me. I tried to make the layup and she took my head off. There was no doubt I was going to take the layup. I would have been surprised if they didn’t call the foul. She fouled me really, really hard.”

Reid, the team’s best post scorer (9.7 ppg), was limited to just eight games last year before getting a medical redshirt due to her troublesome knee.

Nobody was happier to see Reid come through than Walz.

“That was exciting for me,” the coach said. “She’s been through a lot with her injuries. She continued to fight. I felt good when she got fouled. I knew she could step up and make both.”

That put the cap on an unbelievable night for U of L and Reid.

“This is definitely at the top,” she said. “It’s amazing being a senior and being able to do what I did. We played amazing and we went through a lot of adversity during the game. It’s a great feeling.”
