NASCAR has announced that two-time Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., former Nationwide Rookie of the Year Timmy Hill and Danica Patrick, 10th in Nationwide points last year and Stenhouse’s very public love interest, have registered to compete for the 2013 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Award.
This marks the first time since 2006 (Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr.) that more than two drivers have registered for the rookie program. Stephen Leicht won it over Josh Wise last year and Andy Lally in 2011 and Kevin Conway in 2010 won it in virtual walkovers. None of them is deeply involved in NASCAR at the present time.
Before them, though, the 11 previous drivers to win the Rookie of the Year Award have all done: Tony Stewart in 1999, Matt Kenseth in 2000, Kevin Harvick in 2001, Ryan Newman in 2002, Jamie McMurray in 2003, Kasey Kahne in 2004, Kyle Busch in 2005, Hamlin in 2006, Juan Pablo Montoya in 2007, Regan Smith in 2008 and Joey Logano in 2009.
