McDonald's All-American Andrew Wiggins

7:35 a.m. EST            February 15, 2013

Get used to reading items like this in the next few months: “Andrew Wiggins was  named to the (fill in the blank) All-America team.” Or, “Andrew Wiggins was named the (fill in another blank) Player of the Year.”

When you’re the top basketball-playing prospect in North America, you better believe, the accolades will come.

One such honor was bestowed upon the Florida State recruit late Thursday when the committee behind America’s most respected high school all-star game announced the budding star had made one of its men’s teams.

The son of FSU athletes, Wiggins was named to the McDonald’s All-American East team. A 6-foot-8 forward from Canada, Wiggins has been declared the LeBron James of this year’s high school class. In some circles, he has even drawn comparison to Michael Jordan.

The McDonald’s All-American Game will be played April 3 at Chicago’s United Center. It will be televised by ESPN.

An athletic big man who can handle the ball and shoot, Wiggins certainly has shown he is worthy of any praise headed his way. Of course, time will only tell just how he’ll peform on the college, and eventually pro, level.

Still undecided on college, Wiggins is considering FSU along with traditional powers Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina. He isn’t expected to announce a decision until April, per reports.

One of Wiggins’ closest friends is the son of another former FSU athlete. Xavier Rathan-Mayes, son of former Seminoles basketball player Theron Mayes, will be attending FSU next fall. Xavier was in Tallahassee this week taking his final school visit.

FSU also has another signee for next year. Jarquez Smith from Gray, Ga. also will be joining the team. With Wiggins, the group could be considered one of — if not the — best recruiting classes in the nation this season.

While Wiggins was the only FSU men’s target who earned McDonald’s All-American honors, one of the women’s team’s recent signees, Kai James, was named to one of the the women’s teams.

A center from Palm Beach Gardens, James is one of the country’s top high school prospects. She’s rated the third-best player at her position. She’s also averaging a double-double this season with 10.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.

James joins a program next season that will have the unique luxury of boasting three McDonald’s All-Americans. Current Seminoles Natasha Howard and Morgan Jones also played in the game. Howard, who will be a senior next year, was named co-MVP of the McDonald’s game she appeared in. Jones will be a junior next season after having to sit out this year following an offseason transfer from Northwestern.

Unlike FSU’s men’s basketball team that currently is 13-11 and going through its roughest stretch in five years, the women are hanging with the country’s best programs. Despite a loss to North Carolina State on Thursday night, the 19-4 Seminoles are currently ranked 19th.
