Dee Milliner has heard critics say he lacks elite athleticism and isn’t worth a top-10 pick. To them, Milliner says: “Watch the NFL combine.”

Milliner won’t take part in bench-press drills today because of a torn labrum that he suffered in Alabama’s only loss of the year to Texas A&M.

But the draft’s consensus-best cornerback will run and take part in position drills Tuesday and should be under consideration for the Lions with the fifth overall pick.

“You get hurt, but I know I’ll have surgery and I know I’ll be back to normal making plays,” Milliner said. “That’s why I wanted to come to the combine and do this just to show that I still can move around and do stuff with my arm hurt now.”

Milliner said he suffered the shoulder injury when he dived to break up a pass and landed awkwardly with his arm bent.

The injury didn’t have any apparent affect on his play. He was a consensus All-America who finished the year with two interceptions and is capable of dominating receivers at the line of scrimmage.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he likes that Milliner played through his injury and was willing to work out in front of scouts before undergoing surgery.

His procedure is scheduled for March 12.

“It’s good to see that he’s having it after the combine,” Mayhew said. “Whatever it is, it’s minor enough that he can do everything here and work through everything, so that’s a positive sign.”
