Star receiver Marqise Lee injected a shot of energy into USC practices Wednesday by returning in a limited role from a bone bruise suffered last week.
But the Trojans’ good vibe turned somewhat muted during the evening workout when safety Dion Bailey limped off the field about midway through practice and spent the remainder of the session on the trainer’s table.
Bailey, a two-year starter at linebacker, lay prone on his back as he was carted from the field after the workout.
He appeared to be in pain as he rose to his feet and then required assistance into the McKay Center.
Coach Lane Kiffin did not have an immediate update on Bailey’s condition.
So it goes for USC, which is trying to get through the dog days of training camp with its opener against Hawaii two weeks away.
Lee threw a scare into the program when he landed hard on his right shoulder after catching a pass last Friday.
He sat out for four days before going through several non-contact drills during the Trojans’ morning workout. Lee — sans shoulder pads — ran pass patterns, played light catch and fielded punts while wearing a yellow jersey to caution defensive players against making contact.
Lee was in full pads for the evening workout but was held out of contact drills. He was not made available to the media.
Kiffin said Lee’s presence and energy on the practice field lifts the Trojans.
“He practices like he plays,” Kiffin said. “He brings the level of competition up.”
