Danica Patrick has a fast car at Daytona International Speedway — and she just may have the fastest.

Patrick notched a lap of 196.220 mph in the first official Sprint Cup Series practice of the season on Saturday. She posted the speed in the day’s second session, focused on Sunday’s qualifying for the Daytona 500.

The Stewart-Haas driver was cautiously optimistic about the chances of her No. 10 Chevrolet claiming the pole for the season opener.

“I suppose being the fastest going into qualifying is the most you can hope for, but I also understand it’s a whole (new) day,” she said. “We could not have as much speed. We could be in an unfortunate situation with wind, weather, temperature (and) clouds. We’ve done everything we can to prepare and feel confident, but tomorrow is another day.”

Patrick will be the eighth of 45 drivers making a qualifying attempt in Sunday’s session, which starts at 1:05 p.m. and is expected to be run on a cool day in the mid-50s. Having an earlier qualifying slot often is an advantage when temperatures rise during the day.

Patrick’s team brought a different car than she drove in a test last month after this model showed better aerodynamic results in the wind tunnel.

A pole position at Daytona is nothing new for Patrick, who qualified first for last year’s season-opening Nationwide race at the 2.5-mile oval. But opening her first full season in Sprint Cup with her first pole in NASCAR’s premier series would be a coup.

“It would be really nice,” she said. “It’s a very big pole for attention. Other races you’d feel as a driver more pleased to get, but this is a team effort.”

Even if Patrick doesn’t qualify first, posting a top-six speed would lock her No. 10 into the field.

“I think it’d be really nice to know we were in the race,” she said.

Teammate and team owner Tony Stewart, who will make the first qualifying attempt Sunday, was second quickest, posting a lap of 195.363 mph.

Kyle Busch was third, Dale Earnhardt Jr. fourth and Jamie McMurray fifth.

Chevrolet appears quick out of the gate in the new Gen 6 model. Eight of the first 12 slots went to Chevy.
