A little less than 40 seconds remained in the game, and finally Marshall Henderson could show a little swag. He pounded his chest, once, twice, and gestured to the Mississippi fans cheering in the stands.

He and the Rebels will play on in the NCAA tournament.

Henderson struggled for much of the afternoon, but erupted for 17 of his game-high 19 points in the final 11½ and Ole Miss frustrated bigger, favored Wisconsin on defense in a 57-46 victory that moved the 12th-seeded Rebels into the tournament’s third round. They’ll meet Kansas State or La Salle on Sunday.

The win – Mississippi’s first in the tournament since reaching the Sweet 16 in 2001 – was the second major upset in the NCAA’s West Region in less than 24 hours. No. 14-seeded Harvard took out New Mexico on Thursday night.

Henderson, the Southeastern Conference’s leading scorer and biggest personality, hit just one of his first 13 shots against fifth-seeded Wisconsin (23-12). Mississippi forward Murphy Holloway, the co-star of the Rebels’ march through the SEC tournament last weekend, also struggled.

But the Badgers struggled even more against a 2-3 zone defense that they neither penetrated nor successfully shot over. They finished 7-for-30 behind the three-point line.

Wisconsin led led by six twice in the second half, and had multiple chances to pull away but clanked shot after shot. And finally, Henderson awoke.

He nailed two three-pointers in less than two minutes to pull Ole Miss (27-8) into a 36-36 tie with 9:43 left. Holloway scored on a tip-in, then on a layup off a steal, and the Rebels were up one, 40-39.

A few minutes later, Henderson dropped in two free throws, then a leaner in the lane to move Mississippi ahead by six, 47-41. Wisconsin point guard Traevon Jackson came back with a three-pointer, but the Badgers didn’t hit another shot from the field.

They got 14 points from freshman forward Sam Dekker, but just a combined 21 from their three leading scorers – Jared Berggren (nine), Ben Brust (six) and Ryan Evans (five).
