Stacy Lewis wore a back brace for 18 hours a day for seven years after being diagnosed with scoliosis. After her back didn’t heal properly, a steel rod and five screws were surgically placed in her vertebrae.

But don’t tell Lewis she has a target on her back this year.

Not even after she was the best player in women’s golf last year, a four-time winner who was the first American to be Player of the Year since 1994. Not even after 12 other top-10s and tour-leading numbers of birdies, eagles and rounds in the 60s. And not even though she’s currently No. 3 in the world and heads into the start of the LPGA tour season Thursday in the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open on a better roll than anyone.

“I think Yani still has that target on her back,” Lewis said of Yani Tseng, still the No. 1 player in the world who earned 20 worldwide wins from 2010-12 but mysteriously slumped in 2012 after winning three of the first five events. “I don’t feel like I have a target on my back. As far as looking at the whole Tour, there are a lot of good players. There are just so many great players out there. We all push each other.”

They will push each other through a robust schedule which includes a return to St. Andrews for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, the Solheim Cup and five majors with the elevation of the Evian Championship. There are new tournaments in the Bahamas, Texas and China as the tour will play 28 events, up from 23 in 2011.

But the number Lewis is concerned about is 1.

“What can I prove this year after last year? That I can be No. 1 in the world,” Lewis said. “That’s the next goal on my list, to take that spot from Yani. But it doesn’t really change what I do week in and week out. I still have to put myself in contention to win and have a chance on Sundays.”

After a busy, and then relaxing, offseason — she ran the Arkansas football team onto the field, promoted the Solheim Cup in Colorado and did more commercial shoots, TV interviews and other media obligations than she ever had between seasons — Lewis stepped up her time on the range.

“I just have to balance my time and I know it’s part of the deal, but I’m getting used to it,” Lewis said. “And I told my agents that we need to say no to some stuff because golf will always be No. 1 for me. I need to practice.”

And find a driver. Although she won twice after cracking her favorite big dog while finishing in a tie for second at Evian, she’s still tinkering to find a perfect match. And she’s most looking forward to the majors and the Solheim Cup.

“I want the U.S. Women’s Open and I want to be in contention more in the majors,” Lewis said. “And with this being a Solheim Cup year, I think all the Americans are going to be extra motivated.”

Europe’s best is motivated as well. Suzann Pettersen, the heart and soul of the Euros in their 2011 Solheim triumph, said the LPGA tour is headed in the right direction and the talent just keeps getting better and deeper every year.

“There’s a lot to look forward to this year — the majors, the great players, going back to St. Andrews,” Pettersen said. “My biggest goal is the U.S. Open. There is a lot of energy and preparation with that goal in my mind. It’s usually the toughest test and toughest challenge.

“And it’s fantastic to go back to St. Andrews. But there’s a quick turnaround after that tournament because we have to come back to step on the necks of the Americans in the Solheim Cup.

“It should be a great year.”
