If the conventional wisdom is to lay low before major rivalry games and try not to make a stir, Michael Carter-Williams is now going way off script. The Syracuse star gave a decidedly non-vanilla quote when talking to Syracuse.com about the Orange’s rivalry with Georgetown.

“We’ve always been better than them, always will be better than them,” he said. “And we just want to go out on top.”

That’s juicy. It’s true that Syracuse leads the series with Georgetown, 46-38. On the other hand, Georgetown has more Big East tournament titles than Syracuse (seven to five). Both schools have one national title, but Georgetown has more appearances in the title game.

Carter-Williams, it’s worth noting, was spurred on to this declaration by a video clip Syracuse.com showed him featuring ex-Syracuse star Kris Joseph.

“This rivalry right here dates back before you and I and all of us were born,” he said, addressing Carter-Williams and teammate C.J. Fair. “So this means a whole lot. And this being the last game, I EXPECT, and I repeat, expect a win. Because first of all, Georgetown is not better than us. They never have been, and I don’t see them ever being better than us, and we don’t want to leave the Big East with them saying they beat us the last time. CAN’T let that happen. I don’t know how many times we play them, I think it’s two times, but we want to go 2-0 and close out that series and that rivalry and let them know that the Orange will always be better than the Hoyas. And that’s what we’ve got to do.”

“I mean, we want to leave the Big East with the bragging rights over Georgetown,” Fair later said. “So we’ve just got to take one game at a time. We play ‘em two times, so we’ve got to protect our home court and then finish it off in D.C.”
